Halloween isn’t just about costumes and candy; it’s a season bursting with opportunities for growth, understanding, and connection. As a seasoned play therapist, I’ve seen firsthand how the magic of this holiday can be harnessed to create therapeutic moments. In this article, I’ll share some of my favorite Halloween therapy activities that have not only captivated young minds but also facilitated profound emotional breakthroughs.

The Magic of Themed Therapeutic Play

With its rich tapestry of stories, characters, and emotions, Halloween offers a unique backdrop for therapeutic activities. Children are naturally drawn to the festivities, making it an ideal theme to incorporate into our therapeutic interactions. I recall a young boy who was initially hesitant about therapy. But when our time together embraced this fun and spooky theme, his enthusiasm and engagement skyrocketed. The allure of Halloween allows us to tap into a child’s imagination, making counseling sessions more fun and engaging.

Halloween Activities for Addressing Anger

Monster Emotions

Using monster masks or crafts can be a fantastic way to help children identify and express different levels of anger. I once used this activity with a girl who struggled with anger outbursts. By assigning different emotions to various monsters, she was able to articulate and express her feelings better in the session. If you’re looking for quality monster masks or craft kits, I recommend these DIY Masks. They’re perfect for this activity and are a hit with the kids.

Pumpkin Punching Bag

A controlled physical activity can be a safe outlet for pent-up frustration. Using a soft pumpkin-shaped pillow or toy, children can “punch out” their anger, learning to release it in a non-harmful way. For this activity, I’ve found pumpkin plush toy to be both durable and child-friendly.

Witch’s Brew

Mixing a calming potion using sensory items can be both therapeutic and fun. I often ask children to imagine ingredients that calm their “inner monster” and then create their own unique brew. This intervention not only helps children understand their emotions but also equips them with tools to manage them.

Haunted House Exploration

Building a miniature haunted house allows children to confront and navigate their fears in a controlled environment. With the boy I mentioned earlier, we used this activity to symbolize his school, a place he found intimidating. By the end, he was confidently navigating his “haunted schoolhouse.” We used a Nugget, blocks, pillows, yoga mats, and other items he found in the play therapy room.

Spider Web Breathing

Deep breathing exercises can be made more engaging with a Halloween twist. Imagine the spider web expanding and contracting with each breath, teaching children to control their breathing during anxious moments.

Glow in the Dark Comfort Zone

Using glow-in-the-dark items to represent safe spaces can be a visual and tactile way to help children identify their comfort zones. The kids I work with love my glow-in-the-dark paint. This can become a two-part activity, allowing the paint to dry between appointments. The glow-in-the-dark paint I use with my clients can be found here. It’s safe, easy to use, and the kids absolutely love it.

Halloween Activities for Emotional Regulation

Emotion Candy Sort

Using different candies, children can sort them based on the emotions they might feel in various situations. This activity helped another one of my clients associate her feelings with colors, making it easier for her to express herself.

Calm Down Cauldron

A personal favorite! Children can create their own cauldron filled with calming strategies, from deep breaths to positive affirmations. This hands-on activity not only teaches children about emotional regulation but also empowers them to take control of their feelings.

Mask of Many Faces

Designing a mask that showcases a range of emotions can be a creative way to teach emotional awareness. It’s like Halloween meets art therapy! Creating masks can be even more engaging with this DIY mask craft kit.

Halloween Activities for Managing ADHD

Witch’s Hat Focus Game

A game that requires attention and concentration can be both fun and engaging, offering therapeutic benefits. Think of it as a Halloween version of the classic “Simon Says.”

Ghostly Movement Dance

A structured dance activity can help children with ADHD burn excess energy and improve their focus. Plus, it’s a blast! Mix freeze dance with a “Simon Says” feel for prompts like “dance like a ghost”.

Pumpkin Task Chart

This one can be done in a family session with the caregiver and child. Using a pumpkin-themed chart can make task management more engaging. Breaking tasks into steps and rewarding completion can be especially beneficial for children with ADHD. Since it’s themed, it can be something that the family uses for the month of October as a small challenge for the child. If it is effective for them, they can continue to re-theme for all the other seasons and holidays. For those who prefer ready-made charts, this Halloween-themed task chart is both functional and festive.
